Maher Garden Center Retail Manager and Instructor

Location: Aquidneck Ave. Middletown, RI

Schedule: Full or Part Time Wednesday to Sunday 10 am to 6 pm


The Garden Center Retail Manager and Instructor provides operational support and inclusive, hands-on vocational training for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and other students. Builds community relationships with the Maher Garden Center and develops, and promotes the activities and programs of the Garden Center. Ensures that all participants are given the opportunity to create and learn in a retail and garden setting to develop lifelong skills. Manages all aspects of the Garden Center’s operations and upkeep.



·        Completes and maintains all required State mandated trainings such as, Universal Precautions, CPR / First Aid, Signs & Symptoms of Illness & Injury and Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities, and Hospitals (BHDDH) CORE trainings within 90 days of employment;

·        Attends meetings and training sessions as required by BHDDH and JLMC;

 Daily Programing

·        In collaboration with Maher Center staff, interns and volunteers, and training program students, manage all aspects of Garden Center operations, including inventory, displays, marketing, and routine facility upkeep;

·        Help to nurture important collaborations with educators, employers, volunteers, and green industry partners to grow program, serve community needs, and expand opportunities for students;

·        Collaborate with other Maher Center staff to identify and leverage areas of potential cross-pollination with other agency programs;

·        Work with volunteers and students to create beautiful plantings and displays on Maher Center campus and local Adopt-a-Spot;

·        Contribute to development and execution of themed promotions and events as needed;

·        Promote a healthy and safe environment while making positive contributions to workplace culture;

·        Ensures each individuals’ rights are protected;

·        Treats individuals with dignity and respect;

 Activities of Daily Living

·        Teach fundamental horticultural skills (including planting, measuring, care and cultivation of plants, garden maintenance, and safety protocols) and retail skills (such as greeting customers, stocking shelves, and keeping facility clean and free of clutter) to small-group classes;

·        Observes individuals for any changes in behavior or health and reports changes to Executive Director and the delegating nurse;


·        Observes individuals for evidence of injury or bruises and evaluates for changes in emotional and physical status;

·        Reports any noted problems to the Executive Director immediately and complete a written incident report form;

·        Reports all medical related incidents to the Executive Director and the delegating nurse;

·        Acts as a representative for James L. Maher Center in a professional manner when required, to families, service coordinators, State officials, community partners, local businesses, and employers;

·        Represents James L. Maher Center in a professional manner to families, service coordinators, State officials, and community partners when required;

·        Maintains participant confidentiality;


·        Treats all individuals and coworkers and with dignity, respect, and fairness;

·        Provides support to other team members when individuals are having behavioral issues;


·        Ensures that all documentation is completed accurately and in a timely manner;

·        Clocks in and out before and after every shift and submits Leave Request forms when applicable;


·        Assists individuals when entering and exiting vehicles, as well as entering and exiting the building safely;

·        Reports unsafe conditions, environment, and equipment to the Executive Director;

·        Follows safety protocols to foster a safe working environment;

All other duties as assigned


Job Requirements

Valid driver’s license

Ability to drive company vehicles.

Ability to lift/push/pull 50lbs.

A favorable National Criminal Background check along with OIG clearance

High School Diploma or GED, trade school, or industry-specific certificate desired but not required

7-10 years’ experience in horticulture, preferably in a garden center setting

Teaching, coaching, or mentoring experience involving people with special needs
